French Fridays with Dorie - Pumpkin-Gorgonzola Flan

It's that time of the week again!  I'm loving November's FFwD because we get to choose when we cook which recipe.  (OK...I kind of love it...part of me would rather not have to decide and just be told what to cook when...but I'm coping!)(See what everyone else is making here.)

Have you ever wondered how many pictures a crazy person takes while cooking one of these recipes so that she can then write an interesting blog post about said recipe and cooking experience?  Well, if I told you how many pictures I take on average for just one recipe...you would definitely think I'm crazy amazing!  So, I'm not going to tell you how many total I usually take, but I thought I'd share with you how many pictures I took for the opening shot.  (This is the total after I deleted all the badly out of focus shots and the ones with terrible glare and the ones I just didn't like at all...so you're still not getting an accurate number, but you're gonna get an idea of how many shots I take.)

Yep, I took 8 shots (plus several really bad ones) to get one I kind of liked.

And, I only liked this one because of the greenery from my backyard sneaking a peak through the window...every thing's not as focused as I would like.

Okay, enough of my boring process stuff.  Here's the good stuff.  This week I chose to make Dorie's pumpkin-gorgonzola flans.  For me, these were a no-brainer.  Everyone here likes loves Gorgonzola, we all like pumpkin and we are HUGE fans of flan!  I figure, put them all together and we're going to have a home run.

Dorie's recipe was super easy!  If you want it, buy her fabulous book!  Heck, it's only $24 on Amazon.  I paid full freight ($40) at Borders.  You won't be sorry you added this to your collection.

Basically, you put the base ingredients in a blender (here's my new one...which I had to buy because St. James broke the blending jar on mine...boo hoo!).  Then fill up your ramekins, add gorgonzola & walnuts and bake in a water bath.  Seriously, it took me longer to remember how to use my tripod than to actually make this recipe!

Ooh...yummy gorgonzola...I had quite a few nibbles as I was cutting and crumbling it.

Dorie's recipe called for a generous 1/2 cup of gorgonzola...I'm a very generous person!

Before adding gorgonzola & walnuts
After adding gorgonzola & walnuts

So I thought I had enough natural light streaming through the window for these shots, but discovered I really didn't.  Sorry about that!

And the verdict is.....I liked the flan...especially after a few bites.  Neither of the boys liked them...at all...one bite was all they would take.  Which totally shocked me because of their love of the base ingredients.  Oh well.

Anyone want to help me eat flan???

I can relate about the number of photos taken for the post! My photos don't come out nearly as awesome as yours and I still take/delete a bunch! My sister's dislike of this dish surprised me as well because she also like all the base ingredients, just not together.

Love your photos….I also take way to many! Your flan looks wonderful, this will be my next recipe. I'm hoping I like it. I know I will love the flan. I'm not so sure about the addition of the gorgonzola, even though, I also love this cheese.

Your photos are lovely! I really liked these flans. My older daughter liked it; the younger, not so much. My wife and I were big fans.

Steph Your site is really great. I got a kick out of your diatribe on the blog process ...I can relate! Love your pictures. I did the flan last week and really enjoyed it. Thanks for the post... B

It's so true! We take so many photos just to get one right. And sadly I haven't entirely figured out the timing between when to reach for the camera and when to continue cooking. Urg.

Love all your notes on the flans. I'm thinking about swapping out gorenzola for goat cheese. The blue cheese just sounds too strong.

Glad you take so many photos! The ones we get to see look great!

Okay, now we are getting to the heart of the matter, and that is why your photos look so much better than mine on a daily basis...because you take multiples, unlike me who has a "Folks, I came, I saw, I conquered" attitude about posting, i.e. proof I did it and the photos are just incidental. I have got to start taking multiples!! I was skeptical about this recipe, but I have been seeing a lot of it, so I am trying to adjust that attitude completely and think along the lines of giving it a chance...okay, a FAIR chance. Next week, I guess we will know next week. And I will try to make you proud and take multiples!! Great job on the flan.

I'm so glad to find out I'm not the only crazy one about all the pictures. Allison...I agree...getting the timing down of when to shoot and when to stir has definitely caused some problems in recipe execution! :) Kayte...I'll look forward to your post next week and see how your multiples do.

It's amazing how many photos we have to take to get a few good ones! Yours turned out well and the flans look lovely.

I like all your pictures. =) Part of me really wants to make this recipe, but I really dislike the texture of flan, so I'm probably going to skip it.

I'd love to come and help you eat them- mine are all gone! They look delicious. :) I take way too many photos as well, because I really don't know what I'm doing. I figure if I take enough, I'll at least like a couple!

I noticed your new pictures the minute I opened your blog- your entire blog is so lovely to look at. Nana and I treated ourselves (left boys and hubbies all home) for 10 days this spring. I don't have to tell you how spectacular it was. Nana is on the hook for this recipe this Friday and I told her I am scared already. Can't quite see this combo but am game (imagine one spoon will be my limit too :) I was glad to see your very honest comments- that's what makes the FFWD so valuable. Great job and great photos !!
