French Fridays with Dorie - simple slow roasted tomatoes

Last week I was very focused on single-tasking and that was completely appropriate for our citrus terrine.  This week, if I maintained my single focus, I would have been staring at the oven for three hours.  So, I did do a few other things while my tomatoes were "slow" roasting...like spend the afternoon at the beach!  Dorie's recipe this week for our French Fridays with Dorie was super easy.  Cut up some tomatoes, sprinkle with olive oil and salt and pepper (and garlic and rosemary, if you are so inclined, and I was) and put in the oven for 3 hours.  What comes out is a sweet jewel of tomatoey goodness.  Easily served with a variety of things or eaten straight off of the pan (as my son did).

I paired our slow roasted tomatoes with a lovely breaded tilapia (along with a lemony basil pesto sauce...perfect together).  We had a little cauliflower and large grain cous cous also (all of which were great with little bites of tomatoes too)!  A lovely summer dinner.

Have you seen these before?  I just discovered these incredibly cute and functional graters at the farmers' market.  You just rub your garlic or ginger, or nutmeg or cinnamon, or Parmesan cheese or chocolate or whatever else you want a fine grate on, back and forth against the raised tines.  In seconds, you have the finest grate imaginable.  If you come across one of these, snatch it up...you will not believe how much you will love it!
PS...photos still with my iphone, but using hipstamatic...so fun!

I would love to find one of those graters. They are adorable and practical. That top picture is fantastic! If I can't get something like that out of the free Instagram app I'll have to download Hipstamatic too. ;-)

Hi Steph !! I just read that you had trouble posting comments - so sorry (and I have no idea why - I am not so good in this area:) and I will try to find out what the deal is. Your own tomoatoes look just divine and I would love your entire plated meal right around now. It looks amazing. I was running so late in getting my own FF done (see a pattern here....) that I did not realize it would take 3 hours on Thurs night. Needless to say my whole family + guest were eating them off the pan at close to 11pm !! After smelling the amazing aroma for hours they were more than willing to wait. Nana loved hers too and did a million things with the leftovers - all of which were proclaimed a success. Yay !!!

Tricia again :)I have been so behind blogging this summer as well and only now caught up on your recent posts and move. WOW. Coronado. That is just fabulous and the fact that family is involved too - all the sweeter. Nana lives next door to me and my in laws live across the street, so I know how important family location is, esp when you have young children. Kudos for cliff jumping again. I love that ! Still not sure about the google comment thing but had found problems myself when I had the "stay signed in" button checked a few weeks back. I unclicked it and then had no problem leaving folks comments. Of course, no idea why :)

I love the Hipstamatic app and your photos are fun! I envy you that you took the roasting time to spend at the beach. :) They are perfect paired with fish and your dinner looks delicious. That grater is a great find!

I've seen those graters on a few blogs now and am intrigued. Cute and functional, how could that be a bad thing, right?

I think using the iPhone and some of the cool photo apps that are available now are great ways to experiment with photography - so no apologies needed!

Loved your roasted tomatoes with the tilapia. But, thank you for telling us about your new grater-of-choice. I am going to find a source. another Christmas idea, perhaps.

Love tomatoes like this, esp on pasta. And I have not seen a grater like that!! Now I want one.

I finally got around to making them and they were perfect tucked into Bison Burgers I made last night. I'm afraid they aren't lasting long as I'm eating them like candy. Fun look to your pictures and blog!
