French Fridays with Dorie - cinnamon crunch chicken

This week's French Fridays with Dorie's recipe was a simple chicken dish.  It took 15 minutes to prepare (it took me much longer to drive to 4 different grocery stores to find the damn speculoos!  But that's starting to be an old story, so I won't bore you with it.).  Unfortunately, we all agreed that it was not very special...in fact it didn't have much flavor at all.  For the recipe, you brown some chicken, and then add creme fraiche (I used heavy cream, because if you thought it was hard to find speculoos, don't even get me going on creme fraiche) and broken up speculoos (a Belgium cinnamon cookie).  When you chop up the speculoos, Dorie says to leave some chunks, some little bits and some cookie powder.  The cookie powder helps thicken the sauce a bit and adds flavor, just not enough in our opinion.  Having said that, the boys cleaned their plates.  It wasn't a bad dish, just not great.  I'm really curious to see how my fellow Doristas did and what modifications they made to turn this into a fabulous dish.

Well, Steph, at least you were adventurous enough to try it! This recipe just did not sound appealing to me at all, so I passed.

Enjoy your weekend!

Ah - I think the people who liked this one the most didn't actually use the speculoos, they substituted another cookie :-)
You are putting some miles on ingredient hopping, I see.

Oh Steph, I feel your pain: no creme fraiche, none of the suggested speculoos cookies. Since I wasn't in FFwD at the time, I just played catch-up and baked the cookies. You must have been relieved when you saw your boys eat it all up, though.

Without creme fraiche and speculoos you still did a good job on it. It must be good since your boys ate them all up :)

Well that just sounds odd....

We liked the chicken but I added lots more spice...just dumped in a few things, enough to make the house smell good and to give the food some flavor. But I agree...with just a couple of cookies there is not much flavor to go around in this recipe as is.

Yeah, I'm with you. This one wasn't bad, but not my favorite. Fortunately for me, it was easy to find both the cookies and the creme fraiche, though I had to go to two different stores.

Welcome to Coronado, and having to go to all three stores on the island to find ingredients! Glad you agree with me on this one - pretty one-note on flavor...

I didn't love this one either and I used all the "right" ingredients. It was awfully sour (probably the brand of the creme fraiche).... I doubt I will make this again, but I am tempted to try it again. lol

Steph, I was away this week so I didn't get to make this recipe but after some of the reviews I am glad I missed it! Sorry this was not a favorite!

Well, at least the boys cleaned their plates. That's always good!

I agree Steph, the hardest part of this recipe was finding the ingredients! We liked this but didn't love it.
