French Fridays with Dorie - quartre-quarts

Only one picture this week.  That's because this fairly simple and incredibly yummy cake disappeared before I could click the camera twice!  While I was making this cake (quartre-quarts means 4/4 and the cake is based on equal measurements of eggs, flour, sugar and butter), I thought it was going to be a little plain...so I was going to make a blueberry compote to go on top.  But, I was making Sunday dinner and completely forgot to make the compote.  Good thing, because this little baby is terrific all by itself.  I did use rum instead of vanilla, as Dorie suggests.  I think that made all the difference.

If you are looking to make a simple cake with ingredients you always have on hand...look no further.  To see if any of my fellow Doristas modified this recipe, take a look here.

A lovely, simple and delicious cake! I froze part of mine because my hubby is dieting this week. I did enjoy the piece I cut out for pictures.

Have a great weekend, Steph!

Yes, it's a cake that goes fast. I think my family of 5 could have easily polished off 2 of these cakes in less than 24 hours! :)

So glad to hear that you enjoyed it. I thought it was great on it's own too! :)

I think you could have written my post this week. I too thought that it would be a little plain (not a recipe I would have picked on my own) and I too found that this delicious cake disappeared in the blink of an eye. Which is even more concerning for me considering that there are only two of us in the house!

Loved this one, we used the Armagnac from the chicken and vanilla - if one is good, why not use both! Have a wonderful weekend!

This cake didn't need anything on top, although other bloggers toppings do look tempting.

Unfortunately, it's been a while since I cooked out of this book, but this cake may lure me back in! I'm happy to see that you're still cooking out of it, Steph!

I used vanilla but next time would like to try rum or a liquer; there will definitely be a next time!

Rum - why didn't I think of that ! Actually Rum with vanilla :) Boy am I falling behind - have not commented in two weeks...am barely getting the posts done... but at least I FINALLY got my basement clean and organized. I was afraid I would embarrass the kids by still having holiday trees up.
